During his time with England, Eriksson led the Three Lions to a famous 5-1 win against Germany in Munich during qualifying for the 2002 World Cup, with Michael Owen scoring a hat-trick.

The NHS in England is treating more patients than ever before, but today's figures show that in the first half of 2024, 30,200 cancer patients across England still had to wait longer than they should to begin their treatment. Even when people are treated on time, it’s a period of unimaginable stress for them and their loved ones, and delays that prolong this are unacceptable.

The Faster Diagnosis Standard: Target Met

76.3% of people were diagnosed, or had cancer ruled out, within 28 days of an urgent referral in June 2024. The target is 75% and this target has only been met twice since its introduction in October 2021.

The 62-day referral to treatment standard: Target Missed

Only 67.4% of people in England received their diagnosis and started their first treatment within 2 months (or 62 days) of an urgent referral* in June 2024. The target is 85% and has not been met since December 2015.

The 31-day decision to treat standard: Target Missed

90.9% of people started treatment** within 31 days of doctors deciding a treatment plan in June 2024. The target is 96%. 

Breast cancer cases rate per 100,000 population in England 1995-2021

In 2021, 172.9 females per 100,000 population were registered in England as newly diagnosed with breast cancer. This was an overall increase in comparison to the last few years' rate of registration, and a steep rise from the drop in the rate of registration reported in 2020.  This statistic shows the rate of newly diagnosed female cases of breast cancer per 100,000 population in England from 1995 to 2021.

Colon cancer cases rate per 100,000 population in England 1995-2021

In 2021, 59.9 males and 46.3 females per 100,000 population in England were registered as newly diagnosed with colon cancer. The rate of both females and males registered as newly diagnosed with colon cancer considerably increased from the previous year. Prostate cancer cases rate per 100,000 population in England 1995-2021

In 2021, around 170.1 males per 100,000 population in England were registered as newly diagnosed with prostate cancer. This was a considerable increase from the previous year's rate of registration. This statistic shows the rate of newly diagnosed cases of prostate cancer per 100,000 population in England from 1995 to 2021.

Skin cancer cases rate per 100,000 population in England 1995-2021

In 2021, 470.4 males and 258.9 females per 100,000 population in England were registered as newly diagnosed with skin cancer. This rate represents a sudden increase from the previous year's rate of registration, among both males and females, representing also the highest rates during the analysed period. 

Lung cancer cases rate per 100,000 population in England 1995-2021

In 2021, 81.5 males and 66.1 females per 100,000 population in England were registered as newly diagnosed with malignant neoplasm of trachea, bronchus and lung. Over the analysed years, the rate of newly diagnosed cases for male individuals has seen a decrease trend. Conversely, the rate of newly diagnosed cases for females has seen a steady increase over the years.
